Why the Secret World should be featured on the MMorgue

So. The MMO industry has drowned in fantasy games, with sci-fi games a distant second it seems. The Secret World is an MMO set in our own modern world - with a twist. Monsters exist and secret societies fight the monsters and each other.

From my point of view, the interesting thing about TSW is the fact that they have scrapped classes and levels. The game has over 500 aktive and passive skills, and characters can learn all of them over time. Characters can have 7 aktive and 7 passive skills slottet at any given time, which I like. Lots of mmo's seems to drown me in skills I can use simultaneously, and my teeny tiny fingers can only reach so many keys...

Example of game play:

I am also excited about the usage of the Dreamworld Engine. Now, granted you need a darn fine computer to get the most out of that mmo engine, but by God it is amazing.

So.... You get to play a game in world that you can believe in, instead of some fantasy world that is too far out, with the freedom to create exactly the character you want to play. As far as I know the game is fully voiced (just like TOR - they just don't make as much noice about it). Also, the game is using real world knowledge for its puzzles, that makes you use google to find information to solve these puzzles.

These are just a few things that make me interested the game, but the setting looks amazing.

the already ARGish aspect of the game has drawn its own fanatic following. Perfect example of proper marketing done right (ARGs are great marketing tools, and are fun too educationally, since you take segments of the real world some may not know and educate them in the process of playing) creating its own niche.

A LOT of the background myth and legend connecting itself into its own mythos appeals to me greatly, as initially through its many ARGs it connected vastly different myths and legends, some of which arent well known unless you're a local of my parts in Asia, or a local of, say, Iceland (part of the ARG had someone from Iceland tell the entire story of their form of the boogeyman, the key was in certain key parts of the telling), splicing it together into its own form of modern day cthulu-like mythos.

Its definately worth a look if you're into reality-meets-game bent it takes with its background.

A return to skill based system. I like the idea and the setting is interesting.

I played WoW for a few years and got tired of it about yr and a half ago i played Rift in beta and launch and didn't care for it after a while. I like a game that offers more then just a grind i played SWG for a year and enjoyed the exploration aspect and vastness of the game. The secret world has caught my eye for a while. I was a New adventure this could be fun.
hoping i get to check it out during Beta

I'm looking forward to TSW as well, but I don't see that it's breaking significant new ground, really. I hope they can remain true to mostly skill-based character development, but even that's not really new when you consider EvE, Champions Online, or even DCUO or Anarchy Online.

As for the quest progression, it looks really old-hat IMO. Talk to quest giver, go here, do this, go there, do that, kill the boss, unlock the next quest. The only thing that intrigues me there is the riddle system (or whatever it's called), where you, the player, actually have to figure out clues based on real-life myths or conspiracy theories (or at least google 'em).

Thank you for this post! Good information all in one easy-to-find spot.

I'd been meaning to get around to Secret World, but with all the delays and mixed messages I've been reading about, I was worried it was going to be a cancelled project for a long time. Truthfully, I'm not completely convinced otherwise just yet.

I hadn't taken the time to check out TSW. Thanks for the links to the videos.

Seems interesting enough, although in the GDC trailer they kept emphasizing unrestricted gameplay. Yet in the walkthrough video they're clearly implementing the holy trinity of mmorpgs. I wonder if the ideology of "unrestricted" gameplay is something EA is pushing on their developers. Only because they were making the same claims about Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes at PAX which is also an EA game.
