Post Faux FOSS Fundamentalists - It's time to put our foot down
This article distinguishes between the real FOSS community and the fundamentalists. http://opensourcetogo.blogspot.com/2009 ... floss.html

I've come to realize that our community and the people in it, are under attack. We are being disrupted, we are being defamed, we are being lied to, and, in some instances, we are even having our lives invaded.

"The "Faux-open Source Fundamentalists" are people who do not contribute to FLOSS at all. They are people who make demands"

"They are people who spread libel about FLOSS developers when we don't bend to their demands."

"These people are not interested in improving Linux, they are only interested in stroking their own egos. They want power more than anything else. Power over other people. Power to destroy anyone or anything that does not do what they demand."

"Let me explicitly say this one more time: I consider Richard Stallman to be in the real community, not the faux community."

Three reasons I love Linux:
1. Technology innovation through software
2. The ability to take software apart and understand how it works
3. Choice. The ability to choose what software I run and what hardware I run it on.

Three things I hate about Linux:
1. Ideologies, politics, and things better left to lawyers.
2. Anti-corporate conspiracy theories and hatred (especially those focused towards Microsoft)
3. Taking away my freedom of choice (I'm looking at you Fedora)

I love cool programming languages like Java, Mono, C, Python, etc.
I love being able to look at the source code and gain some small knowledge if I want to.
I love how Linux makes my life better through the efforts of others and by enabling me to make my own improvements.
I love being able to choose to buy NVidia because I don't care how their driver works.
I love being able to install my closed source games because I just want to have fun.

I hate the negativity and distractions caused by those who would force their opinion, ideologies and political views on me. I have been seriously discouraged the past couple of weeks with all the noise made about Mono. My opinion of several individuals in the community has diminished severely because they've revealed themselves as being Microsoft haters trying to guess Microsoft's insidious conspiracy to destroy Linux (as if they could). No, Linux won't be destroyed by Microsoft or any other corporation. If it's going to be destroyed, it will be destroyed from the inside by it's own users, developers and evangelists. I have never been more discouraged with Linux and the community in general in my short 6 year history with it than I am now. While it seems like Linux has taken some seriously big steps backward in focus recently, I have hope things will get back to normal soon. In the meantime, I'll have my nose stuck in a monitor taking apart some code. If I have to do that on another operating system/platform... so be it... I really, really hope it doesn't come to that.

What freedom does Fedora take from you?

Java rocks.

Having been around since the unix days, I am offended by the title of the thread. The author of the thread needs to listen to hpr episode 0407 and then might start to have a clue.

The real fun starts with Oracle taking over Sun, but there are a few hurdles to go.

Apparently the author of the thread is also not reading the news.

in any case:

If it was not for a few alleged shyster corporate ip lawyers, there would not be a mess and need for the legal eagles.

It is no theory, it is fact. Microsoft has been adjudicated a monopoly and allegedly still under scrutiny by the US justice system here as well as in other countries.

No one is taking your freedom away. You can still load mono and what ever else you want into Fedora as well as for any distro. No one is stopping you. Just do not force encumbered software on the rest of us. I find that I load in lots of software that does not come on the basic install cd for all the distros. In fact I usually do a net install, so lots of things are added. I have even taken my own source code from the Microsoft platform and ported it to linux. I also download other developer's source files for regular apps and for the web server. Sourceforge.net is awesome. Sounds like someone is just too lazy to install software.
