Post Bussard Collectors
The folks on Star Trek designing things talk to scientists to get a handle on science and technology of the current day, but also theoretical science and technolog as well. The Bussard Collectors are based on a theoretical star ship design by the physicist Robert Bussard called the Bussard Ramjet. This ship would be designed to travel at a very large percentage of the speed of light. The would work like an air ramjet in the earth's atmosphere. The ship would scoop up hydrogen gas in space and be used in a fusion engine. The hydrogen would be scoop up from space by using a powerful electromagnetic field. The hydrogen would be collected and compressed and feed into the fusion rocket motor. The collectors on Star Trek starships have a similar function the hence the name Bussard Collectors.
